In Memoriam

segment of "Time Travelling," © Susan Kamen Marsciano 2004

Had a weep for dear Trill last night then Bruce and I drank a toast to Trill and Tutsi
... marvelous spirits free from their aged bodies.
I hope they are singing carnival songs together….Erin Fogarty

Trill

6.5 hours from his 16th birthday, death kindly stopped for Trill. He was the Cary Grant of dogs.

He never had a sick day in his strong life.  Just used it all up.

Karen Christensen said,  "Time takes back in a cold moment what it has trickled out in a sweet stream for very nearly 16 years. Laser's half-brother and whole-hearted best buddy Trill, who we will love forever and a day."

Thanks for all the kind words.

Tutsi

Fogarty photo

This afternoon, with the assistance of her wonderful vet, we released Tutsi from her battle with cancer as we sat quietly in the sun on the back lawn.

Spirited to the end she had a lovely walk on the beach this morning, totally in control of the beach dog pack. She failed again quickly when we returned home which had been the pattern on the last few days. At midday she told us she had had enough.

I can't believe my curly tailed, sassy old bean has gone.

I promised Tutsi that heaven was a sun-filled paddock of lambs ... sans farmers with shotguns, and earthquakes.

She had a couple of sheep incidents. One where she waded through a mangrove swamp, swam a river, hauled her way through another mangrove swamp (up to her armpits in sticky thick mud) and got herself a sheep ... by the nose. The other time she climbed up a large slip, about 150 feet, cut one sheep from the flock, herded it back down the slip and through the broken fence onto the beach where I was tearing my hair out and expecting a shotgun blast at any moment. She held it on the beach until I caught up with her, circling the sheep and keeping it in its place. When I got there she gave me this look as if to say: "I got you one, Ma, where's your knife. I don't think she ever recovered her respect for me when I failed her on that day.

I'm at the beach house for the next six weeks, first time in 16 years without The Tutsi. As I type I have a photo of her on my left, taken when she was hunting mice in the long grass on North Head -- she has a "do not distract" look on her face -- and her ashes on my right. The legend on her plaque says "Precious Tutsi. Queen of Everything" ... it should probably say PRECOCIOUS TUTSI!!. Ed is asleep at my feet and a sea mist has come in to spoil the lunar eclipse which is taking place. Oh, well, life ain't perfect but it gets pretty close some times.

I do so miss her enormous spirit and self. Her vet said that she was so incredibly ill ... her kidney problem alone should have finished her off months ago. Add to that the cancer and a rapidly worsening heart murmur. He couldn't believe that she wasn't just hanging in there, she was giving it all she had. Little monkey!

Topper

MacMillan photo

There is a new, bright star in the sky tonight.  The bestest dog ever has left the building.  He looked great, but his body was frail, bad spine, lungs, and congestive heart failure for the last 2 years.

Today started out normally, but this evening he didn't greet me, and had no interest in even special food, he weakened before our eyes and by 6:30 we knew today was the day.  We called our vet who met us at his clinic and quickly, painlessly, Topper was gone.  Free from a body that wore out long before his spirit.  Run free, my little man, most  favorite heart dog of mine....

Beeko

Had to release my Beeko to the Bridge. He rests under a tree out on the farm where I work, along with many others.  Jaroufa's Beeko of Djakomba, 11/30/97 ~ 12/24/10……………Kathryn Ladick

Buster

Buster went over the bridge on Dec. 10th. His 16th birthday was Nov. 28th.  We miss him a lot…………Susan Chuvala
