Suemaw and her 'senjis

Were walking down the street.

Ida saw a derelict

Sitting down to eat.

Little wheels were turning

As she hatched a plan,

How to steal the Danish

From the funny man.

As they passed the derelict

Suemaw could have died

When Ida snatched the Danish

Never breaking stride.

The bum looked out in disbelief

He didn't think it funny.

Suemaw said, "I'm sorry,

I don't carry any money."

Genes suggest dogs descended from a now-extinct breed of wolf

Modern-day wolves like these are closely related to dogs, but how closely?

Genetic sequencing showed no clear lineage that led from wolves to dogs.
The latest genetic study to trace the origins of dogs confirms the view that they were domesticated by hunter-gatherers at least 9,000 years ago — but the results raise almost as many questions as they answer.

Exactly what kind of wolf gave rise to "man's best friend"? Did domestication take advantage of a rare genetic quirk, or did early humans merely take advantages of wolfish traits? ----MORE

How dogs adapted to our starchy diet

Researchers say that dogs' ability to digest starch was enhanced due to genetic changes that probably occurred in parallel with domestication thousands of years ago.
Like humans, dogs underwent genetic changes thousands of years ago to adapt to a diet with more starch, researchers report. They say the change suggests that the rise of agriculture and the domestication of dogs might have gone hand in hand — but it'll take further analysis to confirm the connection.....MORE
