Diamond Dog Food Recall Expanded

On April 26, 2012, Diamond Pet Foods has announced the company is expanding its dog food recall to include one production run of Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Adult Light Formula dry dog food.

Apparently, one bag of the product has tested positive for Salmonella bacteria.

The recall of four production codes of Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Adult Light Formula is being conducted as a precautionary measure.

No dog illnesses have been reported.

The recall has now been confirmed in a news release posted by the Food and Drug Administration.

What Products Are Affected

Distributed in These Ten States

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Adult Light Formula dry dog food is manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods and was distributed in Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia.

And these same agents may have further distributed the product to other states, through pet food channels.

The company is working directly with distributors and retailers who carry these products to remove them from the supply chain.

The company goes on to warn:

Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Individuals handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, people who are more likely to be affected by Salmonella include infants, children younger than 5 years old, organ transplant patients, people with HIV/AIDS and people receiving treatment for cancer.

What to Do

Consumers who have purchased Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Adult Light Formula dry dog food with these production codes and best before dates should discard the product.

Another Diamond Dog Food Recall

Diamond Pet Foods is voluntarily recalling Diamond Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice dry dog food because of a potential contamination with Salmonella, a zoonotic disease (disease transmissible from animals to humans). They have also announced that they are closing that plant.

From the Natural Balance letter from the company president:

    "Diamond Pet Foods is voluntarily recalling Diamond Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice. This is being done as a precautionary measure, as the product has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. No illnesses have been reported and no other Diamond manufactured products are affected."

    The recall affects foods distributed to the following 12 states, but the company notes that some lots may have been further distributed to additional states through pet food channels.

ATLANTA — Diamond Pet Foods is voluntarily recalling its Diamond Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice dry dog food because it may be contaminated with salmonella.

A statement from the company Friday said no illnesses have been reported and no other Diamond products are affected.

Pets that eat the food or people who handle it could become infected with salmonella. Healthy people infected with salmonella should watch for the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

Pets with salmonella may have decreased appetite fever and abdominal pain.

The product was distributed to customers in 12 states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia. It is possible those customers may have distributed it to other states.

Customers who have purchased the following Diamond Naturals Lamb & Rice products should stop feeding it to their pets and discard it:
