I saw the excerpt from The Power of The Dog in the Wrinkler, so I looked up the whole poem.  It's so true and sad.  I printed it out.  It's a gut wrencher!! ………............................................................…..LISA OSENNI MACKEY

The Power of the Dog

by Rudyard Kipling

There is sorrow enough in the natural way

From men and women to fill our day;

And when we are certain of sorrow in store,

Why do we always arrange for more?

Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware

Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy

Love unflinching that cannot lie--

Perfect passion and worship fed

By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.

Nevertheless it is hardly fair

To risk your heart to a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits

Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,

And the vet's unspoken prescription runs

To lethal chambers or loaded guns,

Then you will find--it's your own affair--

But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,

With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!)

When the spirit that answered your every mood

Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,

You will discover how much you care,

And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We've sorrow enough in the natural way,

When it comes to burying Christian clay.

Our loves are not given, but only lent,

At compound interest of cent per cent.

Though it is not always the case, I believe,

That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:

For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,

A short-term loan is as bad as a long--

So why in--Heaven (before we are there)

Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

Well, the cover is hilarious.

The contents looks chock-full!

I went to Sunshine. Next issue, you can give me a kudo for retiring!

I ended up reading the In Memoriam, and then going to the link In Memoriam, so now my eyes are all misty and it's time to make lunch. But I'll keep reading. Sniff.………………...................................................DEBBY MAYER

Hi Susan,

Jim sounded like a great guy...no wonder you all still speak so fondly of him.

I received a lovely card from Debby on behalf of RNW for Jessie; what a thoughtful thing and it made me cry again.....

I have a large plant rack in the dog room and I like to grow African violets and orchids. Every morning Dennis would play tug with Jessie...it was their thing. Every day Jessie would back into the violets and break some leaves and every day I yelled at her.

I was tending to the plants just a little while ago and noticed that ALL of the violets are blooming gloriously-that NEVER happens. I choose to think it is a present from my Jessie. ………………………………………………….....DONNA HESS

I'm sending a few messages, each with one picture. You might even be able to use a couple in an upcoming Wrinkler. Please let me know what you think. Thanks......................................................................RON COHEN

Hi, Sue,

The Wrinkler’s nice, as always.  Thank you so much for including Tess. Such beautiful dogs we have lost recently.  I was upset to see that Cubby was lost and my heart goes out to his family.

 *Loved* the turtles section!!!

I would like to thank Debby for the card on behalf of the members.  The sentiments were greatly appreciated ………………………………..KAREN STOTKA

Yes, I had the link for the November Wrinkler, Susan, and have just returned from the tour.

What a fun tour!  Thanks!  Dream was very intent watching that squirrel stealing the apple off the step at the cottage (in that photo).

Did I ever tell you about the time Dream was on her leash watching a squirrel here on our verandah and I let her out to chase it, ran out to the top of the front steps (12 steps), then I tried to stop. One little Basenji chasing a squirrel jerked her Mama out into the airspace above the 12 steps, and this old body came to rest halfway down ... barely jarred me! And I can't imagine how I got away without any broken bones!  And, I still have a hold of the leash!  Do you know that you really do get an "out of body experience" when you try such activities?  That happened about three years ago.…………………………..………DAWN DONALDSON

Susan,

I just got around to reading the November Wrinkler and noticed that Sassy's brother Cubby died.  Was it natural causes and, if so, anything I should mention to the vet?  Sassy is doing fine, despite appearing to have been hit by a car in the first picture I sent.  She just likes warm pavement.

She often sits curled up next to the pumpkin statue shown in the background of the second picture.

You would swear that she is a statue herself.  Scrapper is doing great, he hasn't slowed down as much as Sassy so he gets a little peeved that she won't do as many laps around the house as wants to.
Take care……………………………….......................................MICHAEL REED
