"Pin for Preservation"

{Ed.: We raffled this pin by Andrea Stone on June 20th 1999, and all proceeds went to the Basenji Health endowment. When the winning raffle ticket was drawn, the winner was Lottie Schaeffer Hotaling. She was standing right next to me, and Lottie said, "I've won this wonderful pin and I'm going to give it to my best friend", and she gave it to me. I still wear it to dog shows.}

For those new to driving in the snow, here's some unsolicited advice from someone who regularly drove from Buffalo to Rochester and back in the winter. Pretend you're driving a boat. Every action will take several minutes to occur and everything is exaggerated. Don't do anything sudden or extreme. And slow down! Even people with four-wheel drive are not immune. Every year, I see tons of trucks and SUVs on the side of the road! A couple years ago, we saw a pick-up entirely flipped over by Erie on 90...............................KARIN SHAH

2016 in the Rearview Mirror: Loss, Change, Opportunities

by Lisa Marshall

I thought Miranda would live way past her 12th birthday even though she had been on the Fanconi protocol since age three. We had a wonderful journey together, starting the night she was born here at our home – enjoying life and a multitude of activities over the years. We were still in a weekly nose work class when she passed away suddenly in April 2016. Her passing left such a hole in my heart.  With Miranda’s passing, we were suddenly (not really, but seemed like it) down to just our 15-year-old basenji gal, Flora. Since 2012 we had now lost three of our basenji girls, two of them at ages 16 plus.

I miss Miranda, and in the days after her death, I also missed my training classes and the great times hiking with our friends over the years. My nose work class instructor and classmates were wonderful to me and kept encouraging me to come to class even though it was difficult. My basenji friends made sure I came on hikes with them, often handing me a basenji to walk. Sometimes I borrowed a young saluki that belongs to friends for my hiking partner.

I began to wonder what to do next about another dog. Flora is nearly blind and deaf, and I didn’t want to bring a strange dog or even a puppy in that would possibly cause her stress since she has never been the most social basenji when it comes to strange dogs. I wanted to protect her quality of life for whatever time she has left without complications for her.

In October my husband Jim retired and at the same time, my daughter Amy and I started talking about my next dog. At first we joked (especially Jim) about me taking her 6 year old whippet Brady since we all call him (lovingly) a pain in the butt due to his over the top energy levels. He is a finished bench champion and has done some lure coursing, but lately had been leading a quiet life at Amy’s.  Then I started thinking about him more and more, and later in October he and his housemate Spencer the beagle stayed with Jim and me for 10 days while Amy and her family were on vacation. I worried that it would be too much for Flora (even though she knows both of them), but things went smoothly. During their stay here I started playing around with Brady, doing some beginning nose work and doodling around with the basics for rally. He is smart and fun!

I brought Brady home after our Thanksgiving visit to Amy’s. We are calling it a dog share situation J I figured if he seemed homesick I’d just take him back home, but I think he is doing well. I rejoined my nose work class. My instructor makes Brady’s hides easy for him since he is just starting out, but he is very much into it already. We did a relationship building workshop this past week and had lots of fun. Flora appears to be taking having an energetic whippet in the house in her stride, and more and more often I find her snuggling with him on the couch. I really think she is happier with another dog in the house. She has perked up, is first in the kitchen if she thinks there is a chance some treats are coming out, and has started playbowing again, something we had not seen for some time. Jim says that when I am at work, Brady and Flora take turns sharing the armchair with him.

Only a few months ago I could not have predicted that Brady would come here and bring joy to each of us, but life is full of surprises. I am so happy that I gave this a try. It feels like the right thing for us all!
