Since the people let us fence off part of the canyon property behind our house so the dogs can play safely and run in a 70'x250' area - we vowed to give him a bottle of nice wine each year.

Dennis mentioned to one of their employees he would be dropping off a bottle next week. He looked shocked and said, oh no need for that - you guys are taking great care of the property and are the best neighbors we could have, we are lucky to have you there. That made my day. They will still get their designated Italian wine we picked out for them this year.

Today on our walk I saw something red on the ground and felt Luke lunge for it. While he usually has a very good leave it today he blew me off. He very quickly dropped his find and it was a dried chili pepper. Talk about natural consequences. I was very amused.

Luke thinks the best time of the day is after eating, when Harley cleans his ears.

The Maddie Chronicles. Maddie and Xander had a chase me session today. Xander had barooed himself into the living room and play began. Bowing and head bobbing by Xander which was reciprocated with bows and tail wags by Maddie. Maddie would then hop/pounce down the hallway and then around the couch. There was then a nap fest. Maddie enjoyed warm eggs and my coffee before Lisa got home. Took a bath early as Lisa had gone into the bedroom with the other pups. Maddie decided to redecorate. The bath mat was taken and flipped, two towels extracted from racks, several toys brought in (no rubber duckies), and then the coups de grace: a plunger. Guess she thought the bathwater was caused by a clog in the drain. I then got a bit teary eyed as we left the bathroom. Maddie sped out to the sectional and did 5 to 6 minutes of zoomies on the sectional along with little woofs.

Maddie displayed all that whippet joie de vivre! Such a very long way for the drooling catatonic rescue. How do you scold her when she slaps you in the face while shaking your purloined house slipper?

Weird, warm weather. It reminds me of a similar winter night when I walked Selket and Laser, bundled in fleece, through the small-town downtown where we lived. At one point Selket lay down on the sidewalk and wouldn't get up, and I feared something was seriously wrong with her (she was about 12 years old, and not in the best health).

I immediately stripped off her coat to see if there was anything going on under it, and she responded by hopping up onto her feet and resuming the walk. I guess she was just too warm.... and dramatic!

Here’s Hannah, tossing her dinner on top of the dog (Ju Joe, aka Kunjo). Oh boy, lots of cleanup at meal time, as she's pushing boundaries to see if we'll let her toss food. (The dogs like this, even if I don't).

Makes it hard to teach her to pick up her own mess when dogs clean it up for her.

Do your basenjis lay there, pressing with their paws against things? Sometimes Holley does it to me, too.

Oh yes, the pups are excellent therapy dogs, they launch themselves from other places and land directly on my congested chest, thus forcing the lungs to expel the gunk, and me to exclaim, "Ooofff!"

Sky the rabbit slayer!

At 4am this morning Sky asked to go out. Out the back door and down the back steps she went. A little circle she did make followed by a dainty little squat. Then Swish! Zoom! Pounce! Silly rabbit, fences are also to keep you out! Sky flew after that rabbit and grabbed it, taking it down quickly and quietly.

Of course I was in the chase all this time too trying to get Sky to drop it. I only caught up to her when the quite large rabbit became too heavy for her to keep carrying. Sky feeling very accomplished. Me? Just tired.
