As the Tail Turns

Strider & the Reporter by Carol Mount

September 18th, 2007

One of my favorite Basenji memories is from his earlier years when I was in charge of a photo shoot for BCDC. I was the publicity person for upcoming obedience trial and the paper had decided to do story and photo shoot.  They only had one request for photo:  no “common” dogs like Goldens or GSD.  So I lined up dogs like Aussie, Corgi, Great Dane and of course MY Dog, a basenji.  As in my GOOD Basenji, Strider.  The one that actually would do obedience!  He heeled, he retrieved, he was trained…..

Now, its important to remember this is a photo shoot for an OBEDIENCE trial with nice, well trained dogs.

Photo shoot day arrives and we’re doing it at Thompson Park.  I arrive at the same time as the reporter.  We both get out of our cars and I get Strider out with me.  I stand and talk to the report for little bit about the shoot and dogs that are coming.  I just happen to look down and

OMG. Strider is peeing on her foot.

I’m mortified and have no clue what to do next.  Does the reporter notice? Should I say something? or What?

I ended up saying something like, um; my dog peed on your shoe.

Her response was one of a true dog lover:  Its Ok.  They’re waterproof.
